First post (yeah, finally)

by Raf Sarmento | July 11th, 2011

Hello there dear Gorillas!

Finally I took a moment to make my first official post here on the blog. You all know how much I love you, and it’s really a HUGE pleasure and honor to be a part of the gang! After all, being one of the apes is more than a pleasure - it’s a way of living. So, here we go to start this mess up!

Well, in fact I don’t have a big deal to share right now, but I’ll show you a few recent studies (only a few, as I’m just starting this new sketchbook - and it’s a wonderfull one) and a sneak of my current oil painting. Soon I’ll post some other stuff!

Hope you’re all well, until lateeeeeeeer

And here is the painting - at the very early stages, so of course I’ll show much of it!

Inked

by fooxoo | February 13th, 2011

Hello fellow Gorillas. I have not poste for extremely long - two babies does that to you!

My cousin recently asked me to draw her for her blog Kids Gazette (http://kids-gazette.blogspot.com) and the column that she write in a mag. So I did, then a friend of hers who writes a fashion blog wanted one too, so I drew one for her as well (http://www.whimsicalagnesiga.com). These two tiny drawings landed me an ilustration in a magazine, which I can’t show at the moment, but will at some point (and they want me to do more, yay!) The mag is already in print, so hopefully I can show it. (and all this happened within 3 days! Hahah!)

Never Knew Another

by Julien Alday | December 8th, 2010

Hello, gang !
Long time no see, but it’s so good to be back !
I’m really impressed with all the art I saw lately, you guys and gals rocks ! :)

Today, I want to share with you the art for the book cover of J.M McDermott’s Never Knew Another.
It will be published by Night Shade Books, on February 2011 and it’s the first part of the Dogsland Trilogy. It was a great pleasure to work on this Fantasy book, who got an unusual tone for the genre. Trust me, it’s a very good story !

alday-jona-s-tears

The good ol’ combo of mine: including locally some photographs over digital drawing, then mixing ink washes, acrylic paintings and ashes [true !] all over it.
I want to also add the cover design here, because it’s special to me: our fellow gorillas Federico Piatti and Victoria Maderna have added their magic over my art and I feel happy to see my friends and I involved in the same book !

A very special thanks to Dave Palumbo and J.M. McDermott, for this fantastic opportunity.

Best,
julien

Painted Roses: The Series Continues

by Sergio Lopez | November 6th, 2010

Hey all,

I am continuing this series of paintings (something I don’t do enough of) for a new show starting this Saturday. I am continuing the theme of the titles named after roses.

“Sunbird”, 10″x10″, Oil on Canvas.
“Blue Roses”, 6″x11″, Oil on Canvas.

“Amber Queen”, 4″x10″, Oil on Canvas Board.

As a challenge to myself and to switch it up a bit, I also decided to try painting part of the series in gouache.  It was fun, but I doubt I will want to work in gouache at this size again.  I feel much more comfortable painting in gouache at a smaller scale.  When you get large like this, the paint is harder to work with.  For gouache to be truly opaque, you have to use it at full strength.  No dilution.  It’s hard to cover much ground with it because it will scumble and drybrush across the surface with no water or medium.  You are actually slowed down considerably by having to compromise between coverage and surface area.  Believe it or not, painting in oils for me is a lot quicker than painting in gouache.  That being said, I still enjoy painting in gouache a lot.  There’s a lot of control and crispness, and I like the unpredictability of the edges after you manipulate the paint on the surface.  It’s very forgiving.

“Cressida”, 13″x40″, Gouache on Etching Paper.
“Della Reese”, 13″x40″, Gouache on Etching Paper.
“Belle Isis”, 19″x40″, Gouache on Etching Paper.
“Ivory Fashion”, 26″x40″, Gouache on Watercolor Paper.

The first place I am showing this series will be at Yo El Rey Roasters in Calistoga, California. My friend J Kirk has supported me for a while now, and he’s doing well not only with his coffee but with selling work of local artists including myself. I’m happy to be filling his walls with my work for a month. Come on up if you can…

The show runs from November 6th through the 30th.

Self-Awareness Day

by Adam Paquette | November 2nd, 2010

Hey sapiens. Here’s an oil self portrait in the moleskine, and a lil’ bit of angsty poetry thrown in there for you too :D It came out of listening to Saul Williams while bogged down with a bad job - a dangerous combo. There’s a reference or two to his stuff in there too (metaphor, what else are we living for). Its pretty much me making a verbal statement to myself about the importance of dedicating the lion’s share of my time to real art, even if it means taking a hit in career or comfort. Its kind of funny, its no shakespearian sonnet and I wrote it train of thought without stopping to analyse it - but when i re-read it it starts to take on more layered meanings that i hadn’t originally thought about, that are dead on observations of ‘where I’m at’. When that happens I usually take it as a ’sign’ that my thinking and actions and intentions are beginning to realign, for the better…

Peace
