Nest

Hey Gorillas

Was a bit terrified to be included in a powerhouse lineup for the Safehouse group show three, the “humble” show. The theme of humility within its broader context is what shaped the composition… I hope you enjoy it!

The show is a silent auction, one night only, Sunday November 20th at 7pm, bidding ends at 10pm. Works are being added here, and they are looking amazing, www.thesafehousestudios.com

It’s pencil and pastel, 14″ by 17″ I may be doing a print run, waiting to receive proofs.

Some art for Beyond Eden 2011

by rodrigo | October 2nd, 2011

I have the incredible luck and honour to be exhibiting with two great L.A Galleries at this year’s Beyond Eden Art Fair.

It’s on right now, if you’re in LA you can catch it on Sunday, admission is free, don’t judge the event by my scribbles, there are much better things to see there!

Anyways, here are a few things I have there with either Gallery Nucleus or Thinkspace Gallery.

Cheers!

Bird lady 4

Bird Lady

by rodrigo | December 15th, 2010

The main reason I started this was to reconnect with an old idea and to improve and build upon it further. I feel like an idea which feels good to share with other people is always worth pursuing. In this case it was the significance of the symbiotic relationship between the lady (who appears to be homeless) and the birds. I tried to put in little subliminal details to suggest that, like the trees + verticals above forming cathedral churchy shapes, and triangular shapes, having the colour scheme the same as you’d find on a pigeon, and more things like that. I learnt a lot of things like the importance of ideas, purpose and intent driving content, and only using enough detail to get the message across, stuff i always struggle with, it was hard to limit the amount of detail on the pigeons to just the basic shapes and colours. The final painting took about 2-3 days.

gestural sketch, the pencil dark/light thumbnail, and the same one coloured and altered in photoshop. i did a lot of thumbnails but i only posted the one i chose.

Sketchbook

by rodrigo | November 20th, 2010

Been working on finishing a moleskine book from cover to cover. I’ve always either thrown them out, ripped all the pages out or just started a new one. What a waste! Since I started I’ve learnt a lot through experimenting and it’s helped me process some ideas. It’s a mix of studies, doodles and messy ramblings, and it’s been a lot of fun.I would definitely recommend anybody pick an aspect they don’t like and make it a project. The goal is to turn it into a strength, and always make sure that it’s something enjoyable and not a chore.

edit: Usually someone asks about preparing the pages for oils. 2-3 coats of either Matt Medium (toothy) or Golden’s GAC 100 (smooth) does the trick nicely.

Cheers!

Floral spirit machines

by rodrigo | May 9th, 2010

Hey all,
Just finishing up a bit of personal work for a group show here in sydney, it’s pretty weird stuff, a lot of the themes and ideas have a more personal resonance that I won’t bore you all with.
Feeling a bit lost at the moment, just really unsure of how to transit into more commercial works for possibly an illustration folio of sorts, I just get the sense I’m in between underground fine artsy stuff, and illustration, but not quite strong enough in either field to do anything, so I think I just need to get cracking and work harder on that.
Thanks for looking!

Don’t fink…FEEEEL!

by rodrigo | February 27th, 2010

I’ve been pursuing personal work since the start of this year, and I feel I’ve finally got that creative spark back and I’m really enjoying everything, and having lots of fun. I dont think they have grown as much technically as I’d like but I feel without the right mindset that’s not possible anyway, so I’m sure that side will gain momentum eventually.

Unfortunately since the clothing store I work at closed down, I gotta try get an illustration folio happening, since I don’t know how much longer i can stand working in retail, hehe!!

Cheers!!!
