Hello true believers, (<-Stan Lee used to say that when I grew up)
Here is some look development from a feature film earlier this year. I don’t do too much 3D sculpting these days, so this is fairly rare.

One of the things I’ve been up to for the last several years has been constructing, deploying, and creating software for high dynamic range imaging to assist with image based lighting in post. These rigs are used on set to quickly capture a 360 degree high dynamic range image for each VFX shot involving a CG object or character. After the fact, the images are used by the lighters to quickly match the on set lighting. There’s usually some tweaks or beauty passes after that, but this process has sped up photoreal lighting a whole ton. The particular rig used for this image is the same I’ve made for a few VFX studios. There are now 30 deployed worldwide.
I’m actually going to be covering this subject for the upcoming Gnomon Masterclass event, but I think that’s a secret for the time being :)
In other news, there’s a little interview with my thoughts on production over at The ScratchPost.
It’s mostly lovey dovey stuff, but a fun read :)
