Crit me!

by marctaro | December 5th, 2008

Hey fellow art monkeys!

Here’s some WIPs for a little side project I’m doing with a friend. This isn’t my normal cup of tea - kind of trying to create a kid’s book feeling for these - since, well,  that’s what they’re for…

Any crits or comments would be appreciated! I’m really not sure about the style, not even sure what kind of comment I’m fishing for - I’ve been so focused on concept art for innumerable years - I’m not so comfortable with creating finished pieces…

This is Eddie and the Northwind…it’s a story to do with a boy meeting the spirit of winter, and the adventures and life lessons that follow…:)

just a quick one….

Afflicted with Life Drain

ArtRage

Quick sketch trying out ArtRage2 from Ambient Design. I like their very streamlined approach to digital painting software. It’s everything I really want from Painter, without the mind blocking complexity, and available for a sweet $25 price tag.

Here’s a huge version; if you want to see the brushstrokes up close…

the north wind

Here’s an art test for a little project - illustrations for a Christmas story…I don’t want to give away too much too soon - but I though I’d start posting some behind the scenes shots…

I’m still dithering on the kind of rendering I want for this thing. I’m working towards a digital coloring style that feels like the way I might watercolor…I want the drawing to show, cuz, well frankly I like my drawings better than my painting right now…I’m think it’s heading towards a more polished, presentable look that isn’t completely painted…kind of a digital Rackham or something..

night sketching….

I love fire escapes. It might sound odd - but to me they’re the foliage - the canopy - of the urban environment. The complicated angles and raking shadows create this great texture…it’s emblematic of the city…plus they’re such great contrast to the baroque architectural detail that defines downtown SF…all that functionality slapped on top of the decorative flourishes.

Quarantine=Dramamine

by marctaro | October 15th, 2008

Just back from not seeing most of Quarantine. (American remake of the Spanish language [REC]).

I have a soft underbelly for zombie flicks. I really wanted to like this film. I was prepared to give it a lot of slack…sadly - the hand held camera defeated me. Literally made me sick. Nausea, dizziness, sweating. I honestly couldn’t watch the bulk of the film. To bad really - it seemed well crafted. Anyone else have a physical reaction to the film?

Meanwhile, here’s a zombie, drawn for something entirely different, but nonetheless appropriate…
