animated GIF session
I’ve been really interested in “animating” some illustrations lately, so I took a practice run. It’s quite primitive and not all that exciting, but I hope to get better at this. Any tips or good sources I should look at are greatly appreciated.
While I was making the animated GIF file, I decided to throw a quick process of the drawing while I was at it. Hopefully, I’ll be returning to these soon with something a bit more ambitious to show. Thanks for looking!

Hey man, this looks really nice.
I’ve been trying to do some subtle animations in my illustrations for my school thesis as well. Mainly using after effects for it. Searching the web for some good tutorials (like videocopilot.net/) and trying to learn something from them that can be applied in an illustrative way.
I’m curious to see what you’ll come up with!

Brun-thanks so much man! I’ve never used After Effects, but when I was doing a bit of research I did see some cool things. I don’t want to become a full-out animator - but I would like the option of adding animated elements to 2D illustrations.
Thanks so much for the advice- I really appreciate it!

what software did you end up using for the helmet illustration/animation?

hey Joe-
It’s just Photoshop - using the Animation palette and then saved as a GIF

Joshua- haha -yes, someone already pointed out to me this functional helmet hazard. I like to think the it simply .uh…..disappears? OKay - I guess I didn’t think that part through!

Very cool, Scott! I’m stoked to see where you go with these…
Since you are looking for tips, I’ll chime in with some of my animation school knowledge - since it’s all pretty much gone to waste I might as well use it somewhere…
When you animate blinks, try mixing up the timing a bit so the eyelids shut quickly in 1 frame and open slightly slower, in say 2-3. It gives a more natural feel.
The “Principles of Animation” are good to familiarize yourself with. The were developed by Disney’s “Nine Old Men” and are kinda the ground rules for animation drawing, style and timing.

Nigel my good man - thanks so much for the tips and info. I’m reading the “Principles of Animation ” that you linked…good info!
Yeah - I have no idea what I’m doing or where I’m going with it, but hopefully I’ll get some cool imagery out of it.
Thanks again!

While I don’t have any comment on the technicals of the gif animation, I think you may want to reconsider the helmet glass sliding downwards. Looking at it, it just makes me feel as if my neck was on a guillotine.
