Digisketch

by Ben Foster | September 24th, 2008

Hey Gorillas! Wanted to drop a little something out here to let ya’ll know I’m alive and making art. I was digging out old ref for a project that I’m picking back up, and stumbled on a pic that I loved, even if it won’t get used in the final. I decided to do a lunch speedy in Painter from it instead– thought I needed the practice on my digi-skills. Roughly an hour or so.

looks great but I feel that the background has too much contrast. Hard to let your eyes rest anywhere.

    looks like robert downey jr….hehe

nice treatment…. really nice for an hour or so… wow.

is that Manchess? Nice bold brushwork my friend. I agree about Bjorn’s comment about the BG, but that’s an easy fix. Keep going at it dude.

Thanks guys! I’ll have to take a “glaze” to the background and see if I can tone it back a bit. I got a little texture happy on that piece, and then never really went back to refine it. And Scotty wins– it’s not Robert Downey Jr, but in fact Greg Manchess. Glad I didn’t kill the likeness too much. :P

That’s so good to see you back in action, Ben ! Keep it up !

Hey, looky me. Fine job, Ben! The strokes look nice and bold, with touches of detail. Excellent. Now go put this into real oil paint! C’mon….you can do it. Ya already did it here!

No giving up. And yes, simplify the bkgrd and you got it nailed.

Ha! Greg– I didn’t know you were following the Gorillas! Thanks for the comments. The portfolio piece we shot these for will be in oils, once I clear up my plate a bit to work on that again. This was more just some digital practice since it theoretically should be faster for me to do my sketches digitally (though it’s not right now). I promise I’ll put some other oil sketches up soon. ;)

    Juju/Min– thanks for the love!
